On a rainsoaked spring evening at Rotterdam's De Kuip Stadium, Manchester United took on Spanish giants, Barcelona in the final of UEFA's European Cup Winner's Cup. On the way to the final United saw off the challenges of Hungarians, Pecsi Munkas, Wrexham, France's Montpellier and Legia Warsaw of Poland; Whilst their Catalan opponents booked their final place by disposing of Turkish outfit, Trabzonspor, Icelandic cup winners, Fram, Dynamo Kiev from the Soviet Union and Italian giants, Juventus.
In a tight affair it was ex-Barcelona striker Mark Hughes who made the difference. Although the fiery Welshman didn't not have the best of times during his spell in Spain, he had the last laugh. With 33 minutes of the match remaining, United won a free kick on the left. The resulting set piece was met by the towering Steve Bruce who beat the goalkeeper with his header, only for Hughes to poke the ball home from three yards.
Seven minutes later the striker was put through on goal with a superb ball by Bryan Robson. Hughes collected the ball, sped past the onrushing goalkeeper, Busquets, before powering home from an acute angle.
Just five minutes later Dutch legend, Ronald Koeman smashed home a trademark free-kick for Barca, to set up a barnstorming finish. United held on to win only the second piece of silverware in the club's history.
