John Sutcliffe was a colourful goalkeeper who played 28 times for Manchester United during the 1903-04 season. As well as playing five international football matches for England, he represented his country in one Rugby Union match on 16 February 1889 in a 7-0 (27-0 in today's scoring) victory against New Zealand; scoring a try and a conversion, whilst playing as a three-quarter.
Sutcliffe commenced his sporting career playing for Bradford Rugby Club from the age of 18-21, before turning his hand to goalkeeping for Bolton Wanderers. He played his last football match for Southend United in the summer of 1913, aged 45.
John Sutcliffe made his Manchester United debut on 5 September 1903 in a 2-2 draw against Bristol City, alongside fellow debutants Tom Robertson, Alex Robertson, Sandy Robertson, Bob Bonthron, Ralph Gaudie and William McCartney.
Sutcliffe won no major trophies with Manchester United.
